Experiencing the world for less (Mexico)

IDEA:

Like a lot of people, I also would like to travel. See the rest of the world and experience the uniqueness of each culture. Up until 2006, the world seems so mysterious to me. I only saw the other countries from movies, encyclopedia and pictures of people I know who have travelled abroad.

Since I’ve come to Canada, I have started to experience a little bit of different cultures. I have coworkers not only from Canada but also from India, Pakistan, Iran, Lebanon and Syria.

YouTube has helped a lot too in experiencing what it’s like to be in different parts of the world. Watching videos of Mark Wiens and The Best Ever Food Review show allows me to have a glimpse of different countries.

While saving up for trips abroad, I would like to start experiencing it here where I live. There are many restaurants in the city I live in, and I will do my best to try to find the best cuisines from different countries. I also live very close to a US border, I will try to explore those cities too.

Join me as I feast on foods from around the world, close to home.

ACTION & RESULTS:

July 29, 2024

A few months ago, someone gave my sister Rest Well tea from Trader Joe’s. She tried it and said that it was the best sleep she ever had for a very long time. So today, we crossed the Sarnia/US border to get to Rochester Hills Michigan, the nearest Trader Joe’s from where we live.

Since we are in the US, my sister thought it would be fitting that we eat Mexican food. There are some Mexican restaurants in Canada where we live but we were hopeful that the one in the States will be more authentic given that there are more Mexicans in the area.

With a quick Google search of the best Mexican restaurant, we drove to Meshico Tacos & Tequila. The place is nicely decorated. I have been to Mexico once and it felt like I was transported back. My sister had a sample from Costco the other day of Enchilada, so she was curious what it would taste like from a restaurant.

We were served with homemade chips with warm melted cheese, salsa verde, mild salsa and the best chunky guacamole on the side. This was a really good starter. Then we were served a big portion of chicken enchilada. We are not food experts but we were both impressed by the food. It was flavorful, cheesy and with a generous amount of meat. It was served with rice and refried beans. We are not sure if this was right but we were adding salsa to the enchilada because it made it taste much better!

We would like to try other foods on their menu but we were too full after. So we just planned on coming back.

After our meal at Meschico, we drove an hour to Trader Joe’s to get my sister her Rest Well tea. She bought 12 boxes! We also stopped at Whole Foods and got a burger for my brother at Shake Shack before heading home.

On our drive back, my sister and I both agreed that we really enjoyed this short trip. We realized that even though it was only a few hours drive from where we live, it felt like we went on a vacation. This is probably how people feel when they travel overseas. It is like experiencing a different world! Although we have driven to neighboring towns in our area before, this felt different. The roads, the stores, the people look different. Crossing the border into Canada felt like coming home from a trip abroad. It’s amazing how just a few hours spent in a different place made us see our lives in a new way.

We both agreed that we want to do more of this. The best thing about it is, for the whole trip, except for the tea, we only spent a little over $100!

We are excited for our next trip! Until next time!
